Maldives and Environment
Maldives will be one of the countries which have been talking about global warming and environmental issues for a long time. Our President (His Excellency Maumoon Abdul Gayoom) is a remarkable person among those who tried to highlight the impacts of global warming, climate changes etc…
It is a hot topic among us for a long time, but did we ever really take much action within our little community itself? |NO|
Common Issues: Just mentioning very few
The Number of imported vehicles is increasing year by year. Lets look at our capital (Male’) alone. The whole city is crowded with vehicles. Parking areas are full. Driving is a big headache most of the time. Freaky accidents and kills on the rise. Fuel consumption is on the rise. Driving for fun and for time pass has become a trend among all. The end result is ‘more emission-more harm to our environment’. So what are we talking and what are we doing?
At times the coastguard and environmental groups clean up the harbour in Male’ and take out different type of items which cause damage to the reef and sea, did we ever realise that those are being thrown and dumped by us? Did we not know what we were doing? If we are keen on our environment would we do such things?
We waste more than we should; consider our home/living area/working environment. How much do we waste energy and other resources? What action do we take to save energy? Well there will be only one answer, we try but we forget. Let’s keep energy and other resources. Let’s consider some thing different like paper. How much paper do we waste each day? Well of cause sometimes it may not be due to us alone, it could be paper jam, printing errors and so on. But do we ever recycle or reuse those papers? Just consider how much trees we could save from cutting down if we started to reuse or recycle the waste papers.
I do care
Now that I have talked so much on this, some readers might wonder do I care and do I do anything for the environment? Yes I do.
Among the above mentioned issues the only thing I do is driving, but I don’t drive for short distances, I don’t drive to time pass and my petrol last more than a week.
I don’t throw rubbish (any sort of) to sea or land, except in to my dustbin. J
I reuse paper, and encourage my colleagues to do the same. J And yes I try and save energy and other resources… not only for the environment but it costs too much here: P
Conclusion
I am never a good writer (so excuse me for any misuse of grammar/language), nor a good adviser, I just tried to raise my concerns over the negative environmental changes and issues we are facing today due to us.
What I tried to highlight are some very few issues within our community to which we have not paid much attention, but which we could consider and take action to prevent the harm caused to our environment.
What I feel is that our government and environmental groups are still not able to create much awareness among us, and take action. In simple words, WE TALK, BUT TAKE NO ACTION.
You can make a difference
So all of you out there take some action….it doesn’t matter if it’s big or small. Do what you can. You can make a difference!
