I was with one of my colleague in a café when I overheard two people discuss about the recent motorbike accident which resulted in the death of a young man in Male’. Their conversation was really interesting indeed; it is the main reason for me to write this to share with you all. One man was blaming the way the roads are made in male’ and the other was blaming the government and police for not taking the problem of speeders and increased accidents seriously. Anyone who heard their conversation would think that they are arguing about something, but of cause not they were just discussing the terrible death of the guy. There talks could have been politically motivated but still from one point of view most of it is true. Here I won’t discuss much about their conversation but will express my point of view on it.

I still don’t really understand how road accidents have increased due to the way the roads are made. The person might have referred it to the size of the roads or the way it was paved. From both the ways I don’t think it will increase the number of road accidents. But of cause everyone have their own way of thinking and judging. He might have enough reasons to prove his point.

So is it the police and the government’s problem? Are they not taking the problem seriously or not taking action? From what I see in Maldives, compared to other countries the actions taken to control speeding and traffic is very less. Mostly we see the traffic police going around checking on the vehicles parked out of zone and in non parking areas and fining the owners. Or else we see them in a few places around male checking the speed of everyone who passes by.

Mostly the people who break the traffic laws know where the police are located and at what time, so they don’t even care to pass through them, even if they did they slow down until they get away from the police. The police could have done much better with their manpower and facilities. The people who repeatedly speed up and conduct racing activities are well known around Male’. Most people know them…..but still the police don’t?? With good coordination and team work can’t they catch a guy who drives fast here? Is male’ that big? Can’t they do better than what they are doing? Of cause they can….but for sure it is taking a lot of time.

The government did take some real good action by announcing fines for speeding, and holding driving license and punishing those who get caught for violating traffic rules. But the question is how far is it practiced? Well I really don’t know….but from what I see nothing much have changed since then either.

BUT there is something which all of us can do for sure…Your life is more precious to you and your loved ones than to others….

DRIVE SLOW….YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
